The continuous bombings in Ukraine have drastically increased the incidence of ear trauma from primary (increased pressure) and secondary (flying debris) blast injuries. The resultant hearing loss in soldiers as well as civilians often requires surgery.
A new project is currently under way led by 2 otolaryngologists located in Ukraine to help as many victims recover their hearing loss as possible. A center has been set up in Kharkiv for initial screening and evaluation of critical injuries. Additional centers are planned in Dnipro and possibly Kyiv.
A tertiary center will be established in Lviv for more complex surgeries and rehabilitation needs for both the military and civilian casualties. Since equipment to evaluate and followup these patients is unavailable, The UMANA Foundation has supplied 3 audiometers, surgical stands and chair, which have been delivered to Kharkiv.
Dr. Roman B. one of the project directors, receives the audiometers from the Polish company Oticon.
